Problem
Description
UCSF Research and Administration department needed a
Web site for researchers to track the status of their research projects.

Goals
Develop a turn-key Web site, based on Microsoft technologies,
in a very short time period (less than a month) to meet the production
deadline, and integrate into the new SQL Server database. Use CodeServ's
expertise in Web programming, creative User Interface design, and
Web security areas, to provide a complete solution. Train the internal
engineering staff at UCSF on the delivered source, so that they
can maintain and enhance the site in future releases.

Project
Development
CodeServ engineers utilized a 4-step project development
methodology: What to do, How to do, Implementation and Roll-out
phases.
"What
to do" Phase
CodeServ staff met with UCSF technical team to understand the functionality
of the new Web site. The team also reviewed an existing Web site,
which was developed in a legacy technology, to get a better understanding
of the functionality from an end-user perspective.
"How
to Do" Phase
CodeServ staff reviewed the new SQL Server database schema, and
proposed developing the site in Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP)
technology. ASP pages will execute stored procedures in SQL Server
to populate the informational pages. The site will be secured using
a SSL certificate from Entrust. To achieve consistent "look
& feel" with the rest of UCSF Web pages, User Interface
designer will use the same "templates" for the ASP pages.
Implementation
Phase
CodeServ staff demonstrated their progress and new functionality
on a weekly basis through presentations and demos. It gave us a
chance to do rapid implementation, and "fine tune" our
programs based on the feedback we received from UCSF technical team.
Thanks to the Rapid Application Development technique, very few
bugs were encountered during the System Test phase.
"Roll-out"
Phase
CodeServ staff worked on-site with UCSF technical team to configure
the production Web server, secure it, and install the Web program.
Detailed documentation, and source code, was given to the UCSF team,
followed by a training on the technical implementation.

The
Outcome
Once again, CodeServ delivered the system on-time and
on-budget to customer's satisfaction. http://ora.ucsf.edu/rais
was live!
Testimonial
from Customer
"We recently engaged CodeServ for a web project
to convert a small legacy
system to ASP. My initial favorable impression of Codeserv's personnel
and
professional approach was justified throughout the project and to
its
completion. I found the work and project management to be excellent
and
based on this I would not hesitate to use Codeserv again or recommend
them."
